SEO Basics:  Why You Need SEO

There are various ways to get your website noticed online.  You can:

  • Advertise with a PPC service such as Google's AdWords program;
  • Advertise on another website for a fee;
  • Advertise in a popular newsletter for a fee;
  • Get traffic for free by implementing SEO techniques

Ideally most webmaster's want to get free traffic to their website and the only way to do this successfully is to be sure you're website gets seen in any one of the major search engines; Yahoo!, MSN and Google.

If you're website isn't located within the top-ten search results for a given keyword related to your business, you'll end up missing out on that fantastic targeted traffic you need in order to make your business successful.

You have a website for a reason, you either:

  • Sell goods and services online;
  • Are an affiliate and recommend other people's products for a fee online;
  • Earn your income by showing ads on your website that other's subsequently click and earn you an income;
  • Or it's an informative website about a local business that you'd like to drive more traffic to.

Regardless of your reasons for having a website, you need visitors and the best way to get highly targeted traffic is to have a well-optimized website that comes up in the search engines for a word or phrase related to what it is your website offers.

When someone types in a phrase into their favorite search engine (called keywords), they are looking for something specific.  Either they're researching a product or looking to purchase a product.

It's these keywords coupled with the SEO work you do on your website, that will bring in that targeted traffic you need in order to be successful.

While you're budget might not have the unlimited funds available to pay for a professional SEO firm to do the work for you, you can find lots of resources online, many of them here on SlingBrain.com to walk you through the SEO process.

Can You Still Be Successful Without SEO?

SEO is a constant, ongoing process.  The search engines are always improving the search results for their site visitors.  That being said, there are some common SEO basics that have held true ever since the Internet heard of the term SEO.

Part of the reason why SEO is so important for your website is because, above all, the search engines are nothing more than a computer program.  Without proper SEO used on your site, the search engines can only hazard a guess as to what each page on your website is all about.

You wouldn't walk into your doctor's office and say "Guess what's wrong with me?" would you?  No.  You'd specifically tell them what your symptoms are and with that knowledge, they use their background, experience and education to give you a diagnosis.

The same is true for a search engine.  Without using search engine optimization on your website, the search engines program can only "guess" what topic your website is all about.  When you optimize your site, you are giving the search engine details about your site which then allows it to make an educated decision as to where to rank your website based on that criteria.

To reiterate, if you're looking to get targeted traffic to your website, there's no better way than to implement search engine optimization techniques on your website.

"There is no reason at all to submit your site to search engines.  The search engines will find you on their own.  Don't pay a company to submit your website as it is not necessary."
